days. But Uruguayan pianist Humberto Quagliata was able to summon it from
the keyboard in a performance last night. Quagliata offered poetry and
bravura. His phrasing was incisive and elastic and his sense of color a

Like all great players, he employs silence and space. In all, one felt a
time warp to the age of pianistic opulence. Quagliata's technical mastery

An old Master does not need to hear the whole development of great works to
be able to see an artist’s sensitivity in all its richness, whatever may be the
instrument through which his work is expressed. This is the case of the young
pianist Humberto Quagliata, who has been so kind as to play a Nocturn by Chopin
in my study. This performance has been sufficient by itseif to convince me of
his talent and to augur a particulariy brilliant career for him.

All my admiration for Humberto Quagliata is due to the fact that, having
begun with music that is popular among the public he has dedicated himself
completely to contemporary music (particularly Spanish contemporary music) It is
always difficult to travel on uncharted paths when such travel is very often
unappreciated! But the satisfaction of being the bearer of new tendencies is a
very rewarding experience. What would have been of the history of music if it
had not been for people like Quagliata? His dedication has enabled him to
achieve a great mastery of the style, with profound understanding and superb

intérprete de esta sesión, el uruguayo Humberto Quagliata, que ha hecho por la
música española reciente más que la mayoría de los pianistas españoles juntos.
Quagliata las tocó soberanamente, desde una interiorización que no sale sólo del
convencimiento o el conocimiento, sino de la más pura militancia en pro de la
música nueva. Fue un estupendo recital, bien concebido y elaborado y mejor
ejecutado en el que cada obra brilló por sí misma en sus propias cualidades y

Humberto Quagliata, who has done more for recent Spanish music than most Spanish

the purest activism in favour of the new music. It was a marvellous recital,
well conceived and arranged and even better executed, in which each work shone
with its own light and which brought a clear success to each of the composers
